Many are configured for even further efficiency by having either the idling engine or a battery charge the electric compnent when it’s not in use.

The computer determines when each engine is needed, and the car alternates between using gas and electricity. In this way, the electric component can take over when possible, such as at idle or slow speeds, and gas is only used when necessary. When the vehicle is being driven on the highway or may need additional pick up, the gas powered engine is turned on. Savings on fuel with hybrid cars are usually noticeable. Additionally, hybrid cars tend to pollute less as they are burning less fossil fuels (gasoline).
