Every new technology brings along with it a certain air of skepticism. Will the technology work? Aren’t there always bugs to be worked out? Conventional cars have been used for decades. Their engines have become more powerful over time, but each step was evolutionary instead of a huge jump ahead, meaning consumers had an easier time accepting the new technologies.

However, hybrid cars are a large stepping stone between conventional cars and the next generation of vehicles which include hydrogen and electric cars. In fact, their technology may even carry over to hydrogen fuel cell based cars for decades more, so a brief knowledge of how a hybrid car works could be useful.

Modified Parts

An average person has no idea about how a hybrid car works. Most people know broad ideas such as that hybrid cars are better for the environment and more fuel efficient, and while those are very important to people, they don’t explain why hybrid cars are efficient or why they get better gas mileage than conventional cars. The first place to look to explain how a hybrid car works is the inside. They’re actually not too dramatically different from a conventional car. They still have alternators, engines, belts, gas tanks, etc. However, hybrid cars usually have larger and more powerful batteries, and a key component are modified axle bodies that help to capture energy.

So how does a hybrid car work? First, a gas engine empowers the vehicle just like any conventional car. The real key here is the battery and motor combination. A larger battery can hold more power to give the motor increased performance while lasting for a longer duration.

For example, hybrid cars can accelerate faster while driving for longer. Besides that, hybrid cars actually have a way of recharging a bit on the road. The brakes are modified to serve a dual purpose. Besides slowing the vehicle to a halt, the brakes also use the energy of the slowing vehicle to generate electricity, which is also pumped back into the battery to be used by the motor later.

Increased Performance and Mileage

A relatively old concern of how a hybrid car works is the decreased amount of power that the engine offers. True enough, the engine itself is usually smaller to make room for the increased sizes of the motor and battery. However, the motor more than helps make up for the engine’s shortcomings, but only when the battery contains power. Therefore, a hybrid car is especially suited for the city, where nearly constant braking can help recharge the battery much more easily than say on the highway with rather infrequent stops. For the next purchase of a car, the knowledge of how a hybrid car works will certainly come in handy.

Is the Ford Fusion Hybrid a Good Car?

Ford Fusion reviews are becoming more common, and here is our synopsis of the reviews out thus far. According to experts and consumers alike, the Ford Fusion hybrid is a winner overall. We also test drove the vehicle in Miami, Florida, and found it handle well, be quite fuel-efficient (we drove around for several days, including to the Florida Keys and back before we needed to refuel). We are not big fans of American-built cars, generally, but the Fusion is a great car for the money, in our opinion. You won’t get a high-end luxury vehicle, but you will get a simple, attractive and efficient hybrid vehicle.

The price point of the Ford Fusion is decently affordable, especially in comparison to some of the higher-end hybrid cars such as Toyota Camry and the Lexus hybrid trucks, for which there have been waiting lists. However, we find (and your friends might agree) the imports to be smoother and more attractive, as befitting their higher pricing. The Ford Fusion, however, does handle surprisingly well, especially in tight turns.

For those of you wanting to buy a Ford Fusion, owners by and large are giving it a thumbs-up, and as mentioned even the car rental companies are getting into the Ford Fusion as a way of offering hybrid options to customers. The car is becoming more commoplace, and allows those in the U.S. with a social conscience to feel they are doing their small part by driving a hybrid vehicle made ‘at home.’

The earlier 2008 and 2009 Ford Fusion hybrid models have been updated and revised in 2010, offering a sleeker, more attractive vehicle inside and out. This new 2010 Ford Fusion seems to be pleasing reviewers.

Although car manufactureres – from Daimler-Benz to Ford to Honda – and fuel cell developers alike admit that the technology is slower and more expensive to get to market than originally anticipated, all concur that it is the way of the future.

With the grave financial challenges facing many auto manufacturers, hybrid technology in general has been put on the backburner. However, there is no denying that whether its electric, battery or fuel cell, hybrid and other forms of enviornmentally friendly cars are a must. As consumers demand more eco-friendly products in every genre, vehicle producers must provide options and their R&D departments must continue to evolve the technologies to make them viable alternatives.

According to experts, the major automakers ‘are still sure hydrogen fuel cells represent the best long-term answer for reducing carbon dioxide emissions’ as of the beginning of 2009.

While many companies have worked on fuel cell technology, the excessive cost along with challenges in creating fuel cells which are small enough not to be intrusive (some prototypes have the cell pack in the center console betweenthe two front seats), there is progress being made by those who have kept at it. Auto industry experts claim that ‘even if carbon-based sources such as natural gas or biomass are used to produce the hydrogen, fuel cells are more energy efficient and produce far less CO2 than hybrids or plug-in, battery-powered vehicles,’ and this means that what we’re looking at multiple options for the fuel that drives fuel cells. It’s a very exciting time in enviromentally-friendly vehicle development.

At the moment, several on-road versions are being tested by real people in California, leased by dealerships so that everyone from providers to consumers can discover the real-life benefits and drawbacks for research purposes.

According to the Kelley Blue Book, an often-referenced authority on vehicle values and information for both the insurance and consumer car industries, released its latest lsit recently. Their Top 10 Green Cars for 2009 include bot only hybrid gas-electric cars but also two diesel engine vehicles. Sizes range from larger hybrid SUV’s to tiny, euro-style hybrid vehicles.

Topping the list is Toyota’s popular hybrid Prius, specifically the 2010 model which offers more power and features, as well as a fantastic 50 mpg fuel economy.

Of the hybrid vehicles on the list, the top three “greenest” models are all new models. The already mentioned 2010 Toyota Prius, the 2010 Honda Insight and the Ford Fusion Hybrid round out those considered ‘greenest.’ The Honda Insight Hybrid touts an admirable 41 mpg, and the new Fusion model is the most affordable of the top 10 options as well as offering new styling.

Kelley Blue Book editors took fuel economy and price into account, but also considered for their rankins such features as comfort, styling, and general funcionality. Other winners include:

• The Honda Fit hybrid, popular with young families for its versatility,
• The Chevrolet Silverado hybrid pickup truck, with a gas-electric combination,
• The Volkswagen Jetta hybrid Sportwagen TDI (diesel),
• The BMW diesel 335d
• The 2009 Mini Cooper, beloved by fans for its sporty yet tiny look and feel,
• The Ford Escape hybrid SUV
• The Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV (click here for our review of this vehicle).

Kelley Blue Book executive Jack Nerad says “Despite the decline in auto sales and the stabilization of gas prices in recent months, we still think many new-car shoppers are interested in buying vehicles that are more fuel-efficient and better for the environment.” We agree, and we hope that automakers continue to improve and utilize hybrid technology. We all know that auto sales are hurting, but hopefully the attention on green technology – both for fuels and for engine technology – will be anough to warrant continued efforts o nthe part of car manufacturers to serve and increase this market.

The Highlander SUV looks like any other non-hybrid vehicle, so Toyota has been faithful to the brand and the Highlander style. The truck is fairly compact looking, although roomy and comfortable on the interior. The finishings on the inside of our test vehicle were moderately upscale, with leather seating, power everything and silver and wood accents.

Functionality

As with many new hybrid vehicles, the starter mechanism takes some getting used to, as does the noise level of the engine. First of all you’ll find you have a key fob rather than a traditional key, and just a button to push in order to start the engine. Upon starting the Toyota hybrid engine is so silent you almost have to double-check that it’s running by giving the gas pedal a little push. This quietness, while initially disconcerting, makes for a very smooth and comfortable passenger experience.

On the road, the Toyota SUV hybrid drives liek a breeze. It has decent, although not fantastic, pick-up from stopped position, and is nicely maneuverable on the highway as well as for city driving. It’s size makes it fairly easy to park and yet it has ample rear hatch space for storage of luggage, golf clubs., etc.

Hybrid Gas Mileage

After four days of driving, during which we drove approximately 300 km (approx. 140 miles) on both highways and city streets, we found we had burned less than a tank of fuel, which impressed us. The hybrid technology in this  SUV works off an attached battery, which in turns re-charges itself when the engine is running, so the vehicle is very efficient. Overall, we were very pleased with the various aspects of this hybrid SUV, and feel Toyota has doen a great job.

In our test case, we rented the Toyota Camry hybrid from a car rental agency, which in and of otself pays testimony to the decency of the car – if rental agencies buy them they msut be decent and expected to be durable and popular. The Toyota Camry hybrid has so many great features and benefits it’s difficult to know where to start. Let us begin with the looks. The Toyota Camry hybrid has a sleek and modern look, while retaining the practical elements of roominess and mass appeal that the Camry is loved for. It looks great and the fact that it is a hybrid takes nothing away from it, unlike some other models in earlier times which tended to be odd or clunky looking compared to their non-hybrid counterparts.

Once you get into the Toyota Camry hybrid, you’ll find a classy and simple interior that in no way betrays that it is a hybrid. The vehicle feels solid and roomy, with all the finishings and features you might expect of a Camry. The only differences you’ll find in the Camry hybrid model is that the starter is different (a button rather than a key ignition) and the remarkable silence once the vehicle is started.

The Toyota Camry hybrid is so quiet it sometimes makes you wonder whether it is actually on, especially at first start. It takes a little getiing used to – in a good way! The car drives smoothly and does not seem to lack any power or pick-up as some hybrids tend to do. It is nice and agile, as well as bbeing good around corners and when braking.

Of course you might be wondering about the gas mileage in the Toyota Camry hybrid. We found it to be excellent – we drove around a major North American city for an entire weekend, including sojourns up mountains, outside of the city to surrounding tourist attractions and from one extreme end of hte city to the other several times, and only burned half a tank of gas.

Last but not least, of course you have the Toyota name behind the Toyota Camry hybrid, and this speaks volumes. The name Toyota has become synonymous with reliability and longevity, and the Camry model has been a perennial favorite of consumers worldwide. Offering a hybrid model of the Camry was a brilliant move and is sure to not only be appreciated by millions of customers but by our planet as well.

Honda Civic fans are raving and in the millions; almost everyone knows someone who was unusually attached to theirs during the good old days. The new Honda Civic Hybrid is destined to create a whole new generation of raving fans, and the hybrid technology it uses is seamless and user-friendly. Not only is the car fun to drive as it always has been, the interior and exterior refinements allow for the Honda Civic Hybrid to appeal to a larger audience. This hybrid car is downright zippy, and some might even say stylish.

Driving the Honda Civic Hybrid

The car is surprisingly agile for a lower-end vehicle, although at the current price point it’s not really lower-end anymore, is it? Even so, it is fairly affordable, especially for hybrid technology, and compares favorably with the non-hybrid version.

The Honda Civic hybrid is extremely quiet, and you can hardly tell when you;ve turned it on. The engine system charges the battery while driving, and then turns itself off entirely when you are stopped. As soon as you press the gas pedal, on comes the very quiet engine, and the delay is nil to negligible.

There is a surprising amount of room in the Honda Civic hybrid, both for passengers and for storage. Trunk space is quite ample for a smaller car, and head- and legroom is decent as well.

With gas mileage being superior, you will save money on gas using this hybrid vehicle, and all-told it’s terrific value for the money. The appeal is broad and as mentioned this new Ciciv hybrid is sure to win many fans.

In fact, the couple whose Honda Civic hybrid I test drove were in their late 50′s and quite well off – not your typical Civic customers. They love it and just bought another one!

General Motors pledged to focus their efforts on creating green cars – electric and hybrid – as well as cutting back executive salaries and travel perks such as private jet travel. Along with electric car production, GM’s plans include reducing dealerships and limiting brand lines. Larger vehicles such as SUV’s and the Hummer will be reduced or eliminated in the long run. Even so, many industry insiders and financial critics feel that GM’s financial and restructuring proposition is not far-reaching enough and is only delivering what the bailout committee wants to hear.

Many insiders are disappointed that no changes in management are proposed. While the other two of the big three automakers are open to some changes in management structure in conjunction with a focus on hybrid cars, some are asking of GM ‘is this the right team to revitalize the company?’

Relying on the heritage of a company is never a strong way to move forward, and there is no doubt that all of the big three need to restructure to more efficient, modern and consumer-driven companies in order to thrive and even survive. The companies seemed to focus on the financial crisis as the cause of the problems they are facing, rather than issues such as not being in touch with the demands of the consumer and with environmental issues. Some experts cite that the adverse impact of a big three automaker going bankrupt could be as high as $1 trillion.

Focusing on green electric and hybrid car technology is just the tip of the iceberg if GM is to thrive in the new economy. Hybrid cars will go a long way to helping the company thrive by providing the consumer with more cost-efficient, environmentally options, as well as instilling consumer confidence in the U.S. automakers. Additionally, electric, plug-in and hybrid cars help address the issue of energy independence, of growing concern for all in North America. General Motors has pledged to re-double its’ efforts in the hybrid car arena and to be at the forefront of the industry going forward.
